The Story of Jane: Third Post (Structure)
This story jumps around a lot, switching which woman’s memories it seems to be following almost randomly. On a practical, English-major level that kind of bugs me, but at the same time it seems very appropriate to the tale being told. Because of the lack of records, this is how the events remain to us - filtered through an amalgam of memories and emotions. And I think that as the reader of the tale forty years later, I’m supposed to feel a little uneasy with it. The women at the time must have felt far more uneasy about the whole thing, no matter how strong their convictions. And being so bereft of basic knowledge about how their own bodies worked couldn’t have helped the situation any. I’m glad that I’m reading this.
