The Story of Jane: Twenty-Fourth Post (Informed Consent)

Posted in History at 7:41 pm by web

This chapter ended by asking what informed consent means when you aren’t really given information. This is a good question, and one that is still relevant. How can one make an informed decision about anything without being given as much information as possible? Are we really given enough information to make medical decisions? I’m not sure. I know that I am given more information than women were in the past, but how much am I really given? I know that I am generally slightly confused or unsure about procedures and medications. What’s the answer and the solution? It’s very perplexing. I wonder what med students are taught? Is this question discussed in medical ethics classes? Are there such classes? There should be, and this question should be discussed.
