Bone by Fae Myenne NgThis book is good. I have trouble understanding how a family can fail, but I guess it makes sense in context. The importance of paper stressed in the book is really interesting. Leon is a paper son and so paper is vitally important to him. He keeps everything. The problem is that he can never forget anything. The narrator mentions that some of the old men (almost certainly also paper sons) almost worship paper. They keep all paper, burn it in a special temple and scatter the ashes in a special secret spon in San Francisco Bay. I love that image. In a way I can see a connection between the reverence for paper and the celebration of language that Lurie discussed in her piece about Salman Rushdie and Haroun and the Sea of Stories. Words are important. The truth resonates through everything, but we so often miss it! Thinking about it makes me want to sit down and write! I don’t know what I want to write, but that’s sometimes good. Language is so important.
