This I Believe: Eighth Post (Names and Pride)
It was interesting to hear two essays from the same woman written fifty years apart. I found Eve Ensler’s essay quite interesting. She wrote about naming things and how that removed their mystery and gave the namer power over them. She talked about her own experiences and the stories she had heard from others where they regained their own power. It was wonderful. I was actually a little bothered by Dr. Anthony Fauci’s essay. I have to admire his work and his dedication, but his voice drove me crazy throughout the essay. It reeked of pride. I’m not saying that he isn’t a great man who has done great things, he very well may be, but his voice oozed a dreadful pride that set my teeth on edge. His voice was worse that Prem’s (we should have used him for a model, if only we had had a copy of this essay then).
