This I Believe: Sixteenth Post (Consequences and Politics)
Margaret Sanger’s essay was difficult to read, but fascinating. It basically laid out why she was willing to do the things she did, given the consequences (she founded, in 1916, the organization that later became Planned Parenthood and fought for reproductive rights). It really made me want to find a biography on her! Colleen Shaddox’s piece about jazz was fun and sweet. The part about her son buzzing made me laugh. Mark Shields’ piece on politics was interesting to read. He made some good points and in some ways I agree with him, but I’m not sure that politics is always a good thing. It may just be that it’s better than the alternatives most of the time. John Sheehan’s essay on the virtues of barbecue was fantastic. I’m not sure that barbecue is quite as earth-shatteringly important as he claims, but it was a great essay (and made me hungry)!
