Birds of Prey 102: Thoughts

Posted in Comics at 2:27 am by Rosepixie

Birds of Prey 102Ok, what the hell is Manhunter up to?  And what is up with Misfit?  Barbara is going to freak when she finds her computer system in the state Misfit left it in.  I’m not sure Lois Lane knowing who Barbara is is a good thing, although she shouldn’t have been surprised that Barbara knew who Clark was and had proof (the kissing picture).  I wonder if Supes knows who Oracle is?  Well… I’m sure he does now even if he didn’t before!

Birds of Prey 101: Thoughts

Birds of Prey 101I knew “Misfit” (who was previously trying to be Batgirl) would show up again.  Now I just hope she doesn’t make too big a mess of things!  Wow are things going wrong on this mission!  And why is Lois Lane visiting Barbara?  This is certainly one hell of a cliffhanger!  I hope the next one answers some questions, since I may not get the issue after that for a while!

The Essays: Fourth Post (Further Reading)

Posted in Philosophy at 12:16 am by Rosepixie

The EssaysThe section on further reading recommendation was very interesting, although I can’t speak to its usefulness.  More arguments against Bacon or pieces disagreeing with his ‘greatness’ might have been nice.  There seemed to be a good selection otherwise, but since I haven’t read any of them (or much on this topic at all), it’s difficult for me to say much about it.

Birds of Prey 100: Thoughts

Posted in Comics at 1:01 am by Rosepixie

Birds of Prey 100This was an interesting issue.  The background on Dinah was fascinating, since she rarely talks much about her mom and that was an interesting look at her feelings about Ollie.  I kind of hope that Birds of Prey keeps following her story at least a little bit.

The mission with Oracle and her potential recruits was interesting.  I’m not sure quite what she’s looking for in a new recruit, but it should be interesting to see if she finds it.  This is certainly an intriguing turn of events.  I really don’t know what to think yet about the “spy smasher”.  She’s just so strange.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see where that one goes!

The High King: Third Post (Deaths)

Posted in Childrens, Fiction at 12:34 am by Rosepixie

The High KingAs sad as King Matt’s death always makes me (it’s so poetic and perfect, in its way), Coll’s is probably the saddest in the book for me.  He is the closest thing to a father figure the book has and his death is completely tragic.  I mean, it’s perfect for the story, but as right as Math’s felt, Coll’s feels wrong.  His makes me want to cry because he should have gotten to die in his garden.  He wasn’t a warrior at heart and it makes me sad that he had to die like that.  He was so sweet, he deserved much better.

At least I didn’t actually cry this time, since I’m at work and wouldn’t have wanted to have to explain that!

Vogue 197/1: Thoughts

Posted in Magazines at 12:24 am by Rosepixie

Vogue 197/1This was an extremely random and not altogether engrossing issue of Vogue.  Most of the issue was made up of lists.  There was a list of great moments in women’s beauty/health history, a list of random things the editors liked and wanted to highlight, and at least two lists of well-dressed women.  None of these lists were particularly insightful.  In fact, most of them seemed downright random.  There was a nice interview with Angelina Jolie, but it was about the only high point in an otherwise entirely forgettable issue.

The Essays: Third Post (Fable)

Posted in Philosophy at 4:21 am by Rosepixie

The EssaysI found the observations and conjectures about Bacon’s reference to Aesop’s fable of the cat-woman kind of interesting.  The writer suggested that perhaps Bacon deliberately changed the fable because of the implied sexual connotations.  Why would Bacon have been so uneasy about sex that he would change a story already that innocent?  He certainly was squeamish if he was!

The High King: Second Post (The Banner of the White Pig)

Posted in Childrens, Fiction at 3:10 am by Rosepixie

The High KingI always forget how funny Gwystl is and how sad Prince Rhun’s death is.  This is actually a pretty fast-paced, emotional book!  Magg is really slimy and always gives me the creeps.

There is something weirdly powerful about the scene where Eilonwy turns her embroidered image of Hen Wen into Taran’s banner as a war leader - the Banner of the White Pig.  It’s funny, since that banner could have been absurd, but it’s not.  It’s perfect for Taran.  And it’s perfect that she made it and gave it to him and that it happened just then.  It’s just perfect.

Not A Box: Thoughts

Posted in Fiction, Picture Books at 2:06 am by Rosepixie

Not A BoxThis is an absolutely super-adorable book!  It is all about how a box is so much more than a box if you only apply a little imagination to it!  The book has a really cute story (if you can call it that) told as a conversation and the pictures are simply charming.  This is a wonderful book!  I even love the box-like cover!

Not Another Tea Party: Thoughts

Not Another Tea PartyThis was a really cute book!  It was such a fun story!  I loved how quirky Hilary was and how her action figure and stuffed bear actually stood up to her bossiness after a while.  The whole thing was really cute.  The pictures were charming too.  I really enjoyed it.
