Cricket 34/6: Thoughts
This was a really good issue of Cricket. It had some absolutely wonderful stories in it. Most of them showed strong, capable women. “Zulma” continued from last month and is not finished yet. Although this part of the story was very sad, it was great to see that Zulma did get to play in the great cathedral! I’ll be interested to see what happens next. “Grandma’s Quilt” was a wonderful story about a woman who puts enormous work into providing warmth for people she’s never met, repeating a random act of kindness someone performed for her long ago. It was extremely touching. “The Snow Woman’s Daughter” was a beautiful story about a snow spirit who gave up all of her power for love, and then gave up love and life to save her husband and child. It was beautifully told from the daughter’s point of view and her pain and confusion were wonderfully described, as was her conviction in her choice to remain human rather than follow in her mother’s footsteps. “Ragtime Tumpie” was a fun, upbeat story about about little girl who wanted to dance. Although it was clear that the girl was very poor and must have lived a hard life most of the time, the story focused on the joy of dancing and never got bogged down. I couldn’t help but cheer for Tumpie! My favorite story in this issue was “Princess Piper”, which was a fairy tale about a proactive princess who doesn’t wait to be kidnapped and rescued, but goes out and rescues another princess instead! It almost had a subtle lesbian vibe at the end, actually, but that was very open to interpretation. It was a great story. Piper thought and acted for herself, but well within the rules of the fairy tale world. It was awesome! This was a great issue, and clearly one full of girl power! I was extremely impressed!
