Writing Superheroes: Second Post (Play)

Writing SuperheroesThis book is proving really interesting so far. I’m really enjoying reading it. The author pointed out early on that children’s imaginative play usually draws source material from popular culture, rather than from the stories and ideas presented to them by well-intentioned adults. She further suggests that understanding this play and how the children interact with the stories and tropes in popular culture and each other reveal a lot about how they are exploring gender, racial and socioeconomic cultural ideas in general. By discouraging kids from experimenting with stories they know from the media around them, we could be discouraging them from exploring new ways of thinking and interacting with each other. I’m interested to see how she backs up some of what she says, but so far I’m pretty much with her.
