Cricket 34/8: Thoughts

Cricket 34/8This was a fun, if eclectic, issue of Cricket. I really liked the whimsical cover (it made me hungry for chocolate) by Sue Truesdell. This issue has the endings of both “The House Gobbaleen” and “Did the Irish Beat Columbus?” and both were wonderful. “The House Gobbaleen” felt familiar, so I think I may have read it before, but since it’s such a fun story I really didn’t mind. “Did the Irish Beat Columbus?” was really interesting and certainly intrigued me (although I’m still not sure I’d want to said very far in just a leather boat). It kind of made me want to learn more about St. Brendan, though. The other nonfiction piece in the issue was about Milton Hershey. It was interesting, but not amazing. There were two stories related to Passover - “A Night of Questions” and “Mrs Chaipul’s Lead Sinker Matzah Balls”. The first was about a boy getting over his performance anxiety to ask the four questions at the family Seder. It was pretty cute. “Mrs Chaipul” was awesome. It was wonderfully told with just the right tone and sense of humor. The issue started with a story called “Juggling Trust” which was a great gamer story. “The Innkeeper’s Boy” was similar and had a great solution to a problem! I love clever heroes! The first part of “Long Meg” was also in this issue. It almost could have been a story of it’s own without needing to go on, but I am intrigued to hear what happens to Meg now! I’m really looking forward to the next issue and I definitely enjoyed this one!
