This was the “25 Beautiful Girls” issue. It had some really nice pieces about some interesting girls. Each girl made a statement of some kind about what she thought of advertising images of women and girls and the messages conveyed by advertisers. That was an interesting inclusion in the issue. I enjoyed the short story in the issue as well, it was very different. Overall this was a pretty good issue, but I never find the “25 Beautiful Girls” issue as interesting as other ones.

I fail to understand why Ingeborg isn’t allowed to choose her own husband. I also wonder why her brothers are so willing to flout the gods’ will by marrying her off to King Ring. I just see this whole thing ending badly for pretty much everyone involved. Few of these stories have a ‘happily ever after’ type of ending, especially for the female characters. Now that she’s married to King Ring, Ingeborg is pretty much guaranteed an unhappy ending.

So far this is a pretty good story, although it seems nearly impossible for Samantha to help Nellie move up a whole grade, especially when the problem seems to be fear more than ability. The lessons might help build Nellie’s confidence, though, which would make a big difference. Either way, they certainly couldn’t be a bad idea!

Ok, the ending was cute. I liked how she managed to “lie” to fulfill the quest. It was very clever. The ending was almost bittersweet, but most definitely interesting! I really enjoyed this book. I do want to go back and read the first two in the series, though, since there is quite a bit I didn’t quite understand as well as I think I was supposed to!

Why are Ingeborg’s brothers allowed to determine her fate with no regard to her wishes at all? Why is she clearly property? It’s exactly like they inherited her and the right to give her away or not from their father, just as they inherited his crown. That totally sucks!

That is a crappy win state. And where were Corney and Luis in all that, anyway? Kaye became Rioben’s consort, as she wanted to, but her friends were somewhat conspicuously absent through it all. And now I have no idea what’s going to happen with the faerie courts! I suppose it gives Holly Black more things to write about!

Wayland’s story is certainly an odd one. Again the women come out badly. The poor Valkyries did exactly what they were told - they came when Odin called - but they still got punished for being away too long! If he wanted them back sooner, why didn’t he call sooner? And Wayland is sweet, but also kind of bitter. It doesn’t sound like he really loved Bodvild, he just married her to piss off her parents. That sucks a lot. She definitely deserves better! But you do have to feel sorry for the whole lot of them!

Kaye certainly tries hard, but I can’t help feeling like she just doesn’t get it. She is so focused on her now-messed-up romance with Rioben and her new status as a pixie that she doesn’t even realize anything else is going on. She just seems so clueless! And she really shouldn’t trust Silarial so easily, but for some stupid reason she does! Why?

This is another really cute dinosaur book from Yolen and Teague. I love the illustrations! I did notice that all the dinosaurs are always male. Why is that? Are there never any female dinosaurs, or do they think girls don’t read these books (which is grossly incorrect)? Anyway, this is a cute book, nonetheless!

This is a cute book about idioms and metaphorical sayings. I really liked the sidebar information on each page, there was really interesting information included. There were interesting sayings chosen, although not necessarily what I expected. Overall, this was a cute, interesting book!
