Norse Myths and Classical Myths: Twenty-Third Post (Ariadne)
I’m really not sure why Hawthorne changed the part of the story where Ariadne flees with Theseus and is subsequently left on an island by him. Hawthorne even refers to the original version! It’s very curious. He kept the part where Theseus is thoughtless about the sails and his father kills himself because of it. But somehow, a woman leaving her father and a hero abandoning his girlfriend is too much for him. Strange.
