The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Second Post (Male Roles)
Arthur is a very atypical male protagonist. He’s not feminine in portrayal or anything, but thus far in the story he’s played what is typically a female’s role in the narrative. He’s constantly in need of protection from someone else, yet very often he is the “details” oriented thinker of the pair. Ford, on the other hand, is completely playing the ‘guy’ role. He’s the prepared protector who is full of bravado that sometimes proves unfounded. He sees the big picture, but usually misses the details. They work well together, which is hardly surprising since each is taking a fairly classic role that compliments the other. Now we’ll see if Arthur and Ford’s relationship change with the introduction of another couple repeating almost exactly the same patterns: Trillian and Zaphod.
