We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: Thoughts
This is a great read-aloud book and I love the inclusion of sound effects, but the story itself doesn’t make much sense. If they are somewhere where they might run into a snowstorm, why are they all clearly dressed for summer? And why is this man, these four kids and this dog out on a bear hunt anyway? They certainly don’t seem dressed or equipped for the journey they’re on! It’s very odd! The illustrations are great, but they really do nothing to make any sense of this story. I suppose I’m being too literal and this would make a good pre-gamer book, but the freak snowstorm bugged me. And if you’re hunting bears, you should take some equipment! I actually think it’s the illustrations I have an issue with here more than the text, but since you can’t really separate easily them it’s hard to be certain.
