The text in this book is very simple, but it works well. You can feel Ruby’s excitement throughout the story. The illustrations are beautiful. I especially love the endpapers, which look like toile with scenes of charming people in old-fashioned costumes displaying proper manners!
This was cute and made me smile. It would be fun to read aloud because it has some great rhythms. It’s really more like music than poetry, which it recognizes by celebrating different musical styles and being all about sound. The character is cute and endearing and works really well. I enjoyed this book a lot!
This was a great collection of paintings on a theme, like Raczka’s book with paintings of people reading was. Unfortunately, the text wasn’t as good in this one. Still, the book is interesting and enjoyable to look through.

I made some new friends at my new school through a shared prank. This was a great ending to finish this book on! I enjoyed reading this book much more than I thought I would. I was also pleasantly surprised that I was able to read my character as a girl all the way through! That was awesome!

I got to a school that teaches kung fu, but it didn’t always work out. I did end up receiving training in several endings (once from a celebrated master and once by returning home as well as from the school itself), but I also died by falling off a roof once and got myself expelled once.

I found yet another ending where I helped the bandits and got official recognition from the government. I also got myself killed and baked into dumplings by the evil innkeepers (hello Sweeney Todd yet again!). After that, I spent some time lost in the woods and met a snake spirit. That never turned out well even though the spirit seemed pretty nice, but I didn’t die either.

I joined the outlaws and earned acclaim and honor as an army page twice. I also found more ways to die and an ending where I was convicted of helping an innkeeper and his wife will people and turn their bodies into dumplings and fertilizer. It was a random Sweeney Todd ending out of the blue!

Hm… I’m not doing very well here. I’ve gotten my mother killed and made an invalid for the rest of her life and captured by bandits. I’ve also gotten myself killed quite a few times! The snake was totally a no-win situation, though, which sucks. The Black Serpents are serious cheaters!

I really like the woman I got to be my teacher, but some of her friends are definitely not to be trusted! I hope that I get to learn more about each one of them, though, since they all seem interesting. At this point, I’ve learned at least a little about everyone except for Lim Likjau.

What just happened? How did I turn into a zombie? Are my parents evil and creating zombies with herbs and tea or was I scratched by a zombie cat? Either way, this is very weird. Seriously, this had better be explained somewhere in this book! I have to admit, though, that ending definitely did surprise me!
